Coffee turned professional in 1980 and had limited success. He won his first 26 bouts, leading up to a clash with Jeff Fenech for the IBF bantamweight title in 1985. Coffee lost the bout via decision. After the loss, Coffee's career went downhill. He retired in 1994 having won 35, lost 13, and drawn 1 with 19 KO.
After retirement from professional boxing, Coffee took on a role in training fighters. Of those under his tutelage, Canadian standout Tebor Brosch is the only one to win a professional title.
